No. A game does not take the rent. A game does not own your Sunday. A game does not make you hide a second account.
If the app knows your pulse better than your friends do, you already have your answer. There is help. Jesus Christ came for people who chase a rush and call it harmless.
You can stop lying about "just entertainment" today.
What the bet is after
Sports can be a gift. Skill. Rest. A shared afternoon. Betting on the same screen is often something else. Greed dressed as fandom. A promise that the next slip will fix the last one. A small god of chance.
Chapter 6 of the Second London Baptist Confession of 1689 says we are servants of sin and partakers of death and all other miseries unless the Lord Jesus sets us free. That misery can look like debt. Shame. A marriage that no longer trusts your word. A heart that cannot watch a game without a stake.
Article III of the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 says we become transgressors as soon as we can act. Article XV says Christians should oppose every form of greed, selfishness, and vice. The 2000 text names greed. It does not need a new vice list from us. The app is enough.
You may tell yourself you can afford it. The question is not only money. The question is worship. Who do you trust when you are bored, angry, or sure you are due?
The gospel names greedy people. Then it washes them.
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11, ESV)
Greedy. Swindlers. Idolaters. Some of you were that. Washed.
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1, ESV)
Stand firm. Delete the app. That is not legalism. That is refusing a yoke.
Article IV of the Baptist Faith and Message says there is no salvation apart from personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. Sanctification is the Spirit enabling you to grow. Chapter 13 of the 1689 Confession says the desires that rise from the old body of sin are put to death more and more. The war can still go badly for a season. The Spirit still supplies strength.
Chapter 15 of the Confession says repent of each specific, known sin specifically. The bets. The borrowed money. The lie to your spouse. The way you taught a younger person that this is normal.
One next step with Jesus
Open your hands.
"Lord Jesus, I have trusted a wager more than I have trusted you. I have loved money and a rush. Forgive me. I believe you died and rose. Set me free. I will tell the truth about the accounts and the debt."
Then tell a pastor. Bring the numbers. Ask for counsel. If you owe people, make a plan to repay. If you have never belonged to Christ, start with the gospel, not with a self-help streak.
The church will not mock you for coming clean. We will not bless the app either.
