You are not late because the school talked first. You are the parent. God gave you this child. You can open your mouth tonight.
A classmate used new words. A teacher asked the class to share pronouns. A library book treated a boy as if he could become a girl. You feel the heat in your chest. You also love your child. Start there. Sit down. Put the phone away. Ask what they heard. Ask what they think it means. Listen all the way through. Then tell the truth with a steady voice.
God made us male and female. He said so at the start. Moods shift. This does not.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27, ESV)
A boy is a boy. A girl is a girl. The body is not a costume. Your child is not a project for the culture. From the moment of conception, this child is a blessing and a heritage from the Lord.
Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. (Psalm 127:3, ESV)
The Baptist Faith and Message 2000, Article XVIII, says parents are to teach their children spiritual and moral values, and to demonstrate God's pattern for marriage. The Second London Confession, chapter 25, says marriage is between one man and one woman. That pattern is what your home should show. A husband and a wife. A father and a mother, where God has given both. You do not need a seminar to say that. You need a kitchen table and a Bible.
Do not turn the talk into a war with the school on night one. You may need to speak with a teacher later. You may need to choose a different book. Tonight your child needs to know two things at once. God made them. You will not leave them alone in the noise.
Use plain words. For a younger child: God made you a boy, or God made you a girl. Your body tells the truth. We thank him for that. For an older child: some people feel a deep mismatch with the body God gave. Feelings can be heavy. Jesus still rules the body he made. We do not hate a classmate who is confused. We also do not rewrite Genesis.
If your child is the one who feels the mismatch, do not panic in front of them. Do not mock. Do not rush them toward a clinic, a new name, or a secret at school. Bring them to Jesus. Keep meals. Keep bedtime. Keep church. Ask for help before the story hardens.
Faith does not grow from a perfect speech. The 1689 Confession, chapter 14, says the grace of faith is the work of the Spirit, ordinarily produced by the ministry of the Word. Chapter 10 says God calls people by his Word and Spirit. You plant. You cannot raise the dead. So read Genesis 1 with them. Pray a short prayer. Tell them you will talk again this week.
One next step
Tonight, after dinner, read Genesis 1:27 out loud. Say one sentence: God made male and female, and he made you on purpose. Then pray, together, that Jesus would keep your child's mind and body. If you have not trusted Christ yourself, start with the gospel
. If the talk already feels too heavy for your house, ask for counsel at our biblical counseling center. We will sit with you. We will not treat your child as a debate.
Come talk. Sunday morning is open. A quieter conversation is open too.
