We live together. Why get married?
You already share a lease. Maybe you share a kid. Kingston rent in 2026 does not leave much room for two places. So you stacked the furniture and told yourselves you are committed. The phones already know. The bank already knows. Why add a courthouse and a church?
Because a lease is not a covenant. A shared password is not a vow. Sharing a bed does not make you one flesh before God.
A lot of couples wait. Student loans. Housing. A long engagement that never quite becomes a wedding. Porn on the phone after the other person falls asleep. You can live like spouses and still keep an exit in your back pocket. That exit is the point. Marriage closes it.
God is not trying to tax you. He is trying to protect you. Sex belongs inside a public promise between one man and one woman. Without that promise, you keep taking what marriage is meant to give, and you keep the right to leave when the month gets hard.
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 (ESV)
But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:2 (ESV)
Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Hebrews 13:4 (ESV)
The 1689 Confession, chapter 25, says marriage is "to be between one man and one woman." It was "ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife" and "for the prevention of immorality." Christians "are to marry in the Lord." The Baptist Faith and Message 2000, Article XVIII, says the same thing in plainer words: "Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime." A covenant you have not made is a covenant you do not have.
If you belong to Jesus, this is not a style question. The 1689, chapter 15, says repentance means you "humble yourselves" for specific sin, hate it, and "endeavor" to live in a way that pleases God. The BFM, Article IV, calls repentance "a genuine turning from sin toward God." Moving in together was a turn. Getting married in the Lord is a different turn.
One next step with Jesus: tell the truth this week. Name the arrangement. If you are both believers and free to marry, set a real date and stop playing house. If one of you does not know Christ, do not use a wedding to paper over unbelief. Start with Jesus. We will help you sort the lease, the family, and the timeline without pretending a lease is a vow.
Come talk. Read the gospel. Ask for biblical counseling. Take a next step if you are ready to follow Jesus in public, including baptism.
